Where we Stand in St. Louis after Proposition M
Proposition M requested a 1/2-cent sales tax in St. Louis County for MetroLink expansion and operations. The measure failed on November 4 by a small margin. If it had passed it would have raised about $80 million/year. In addition, it would have triggered a 1/4 sales tax in St. Louis City from a tax that was passed in the City in 1997. The 1/2-cent sales tax would have cost the average family $50/year, about the cost of one tank of gas, or $4 per month. Its failure resulted in massive service cuts set for March 30, agency wide job losses and a fare increase which went into effect Jan. 1.

The Greater St. Louis Transit Alliance is currently investigating alternative ways to fund the expansion and operation of the system.

LATEST NEWS: In Jefferson City, SB 477 which would allow for the creation of transit development districts for the purposes of building and operating transit has passed out of the Senate Transportation Committee last week. Several groups testified in favor of the bill including CMT, The Greater St. Louis Transit Alliance, SEIU, RCGA, The City of St. Louis, KCATA and Springfield Utilities. For those of you in the capital on a regular basis, words and letters of support for the bill are greatly appreciated.
